Chest Physiotherapy

Chest Physiotherapy (CPT)

Chest physiotherapy is one of those strange, but very effective, physio techniques that is shrouded in mystery.

What is chest physiotherapy all about?

Chest physio for chest infections includes conditions from everyday coughs and sinus infections to bronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, atelectasis, pneumothorax (collapsed lung), pulmonary oedema, bronchiectasis and pleural effusion, as well as chronic conditions like asthma and cystic fibrosis.

Chest physio can be performed on adults, even the elderly, children, toddlers or a small child, and babies. Chest physio for babies is no different to what is done for adults, as none of it is painful - they may just need some extra help to get rid of the secretions in their noses and sinuses, as they cannot blow it out yet.

The physiotherapist will normally start with nebulization, either with your own prescription solutions or with saline, as physiotherapists are not allowed to give medicine not prescribed by your doctor. The next step is to put you in a position to get gravity to help with draining the secretions – it is called postural drainage.

Next is normally percussion or vibrations on the chest over the lungs. This helps to loosen up all the phlegm, so it is easier for you to cough it up. The percussions also stimulate all the breathing muscles over the chest and in between the ribs so that you can breathe deeper and more effectively. The more air that flows through the lung, the more secretions are moved out. The session normally ends with some breathing exercises and home advice.
