Rehabilitation after surgery

Physiotherapy Rehabilitation after surgery

As much as we try and avoid having an operation, sometimes it is necessary for many health-related problems. Rehabilitation after surgery is normally needed for orthopaedic problems (but not limited to) like:

  • Ankle surgery
  • Knee surgery
  • Hip surgery
  • Back and neck surgery (spinal surgery)
  • Shoulder surgery
  • Elbow surgery
  • Hand surgery
  • Jaw surgery

Post-op physio rehab is important to get you moving. You will have pain and your instinct will be to keep that part of your body still. Movement, however, is extremely important to get the circulation going again, which will bring oxygen into the area to speed up healing. Post-op physical therapy will teach you safe movement to get you back on your feet without damaging the area you've just had operated on.

Once discharged from the hospital, post-surgery rehab will most likely focus on mobilizing the affected joint. The physio will look at releasing the muscle spasms that have developed around the joint.  Remember, the job of the brain is to protect the body. Sometimes, however, we need to override that protective mechanism. The next step will be to re-activate and strengthen the muscles that have shut down because of the pain and the swelling.

Further post-op rehabilitation will include re-educating your walking pattern (if it was an operation involving the spine and lower limbs) and then finally teaching you appropriate exercises after surgery to get you back to your chosen activity or just to normal day to day life.

If you are going to have elective surgery, in other words, you can plan the surgery, rehabilitation exercises before the surgery will make the world of difference. The stronger you are going into the operation, the quicker you will likely recover afterwards. The brain runs the body, and the better the brain is conditioned to move the body in the right way, the quicker the recovery after surgery.
